Frey Foundation of Minnesota Welcomes Third Generation to Executive Team
Flor Treviño Frey joins as senior director of Twin Cities-based philanthropic organization
MINNEAPOLIS — OCTOBER 2, 2019 — Frey Foundation of Minnesota announces Flor Treviño Frey has joined as senior director. Ms. Treviño Frey is the first member of the third generation of the family to join the foundation’s day-to-day management team. Frey Foundation strengthens the community through direct giving to organizations that promote self-sufficiency and stimulate creative change, resulting in improved quality of life for all. The foundation gives priority to organizations in supportive affordable housing, education and health and human services.
“With family foundations, succession can be complicated, and it’s rare for one to make it to the third generation intact. Our family is proud to have proactively initiated this process with the goal of building an even stronger organization now and for generations to come,” says Jim Frey. “This succession is different – it is less about passing the torch and more about learning how to work together, intergenerationally.”
Treviño Frey will work under the tutelage of president and CEO Jim Frey and vice-president Carol Frey Wolfe in managing the foundation.
“I’m looking forward to working with Flor. I know the foundation will benefit from her fresh perspective and unique skill set,” says Carol Frey Wolfe. “Together, we will continue to drive our mission forward and potentially explore new areas. I also look forward to welcoming other members of the third generation in the future.”
Flor Treviño Frey has been on the foundation board since 2012 and has spent the last four years as a marketing manager for 3M’s iconic Scotch™ brand. She holds an MBA from Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business and has worked in the health and wellness industry and for tech startups.
“This is a pivotal moment for me, both professionally and personally as I move from the pursuit of success to the pursuit of significance. As senior director at Frey Foundation, I am in a unique position to help people and be a leading influencer of change on a much larger scale,” says Treviño Frey. “My professional roots are in the nonprofit world – my very first role out of undergrad was at the American Cancer Society as a development manager. I even met my husband, Peter Frey, through the nonprofit world – we volunteered together. By joining our family’s foundation, I’m coming full circle.”
“Having a third-generation family member actively involved with the strategy and day-to-day operations of a private family foundation is extremely rare,” says Frey Foundation founder and board chair, Gene Frey. “I’m very proud to see this wonderful transition occur. Flor is a truly gifted person and I look forward to the time when additional members of our family bring their particular talents to this enterprise.”
The Frey Foundation funds creative nonprofits in the Minneapolis/St. Paul metro area to generate better ideas for the community. The foundation, founded by Eugene and Mary Frey in 1988, is a reflection of the family’s long-standing commitment to the community. When the family business, Waldorf Corporation, was sold in 1997, the foundation grew to support more organizations, seeking out nonprofits engaged in meaningful change in the community. For the Frey family, the foundation has become an integral part of family life and an important link between generations. For more, visit FreyFoundationMN.org.
