Frey Foundation to Sunset in 2025, Ushering in Next Chapter of Impact

Three new family foundations will carry forward the Frey family's commitment to service, impact, and philanthropy.

After more than 25 years of dedicated service to the Twin Cities community, the Frey Foundation will transition from a single foundation to three distinct family-led foundations. This carefully considered decision, initiated by our founder and approved by the board in October 2024, reflects our commitment to deepening our impact and aligning our resources with the evolving needs of both our community and family.

The Frey Foundation will formally sunset its operations on December 31, 2025. During this transition, we are committed to supporting our partners with care and collaboration. To ensure stability, current grantees will receive additional sunset funding, and our staff will remain actively engaged throughout the process to sustain our valued community relationships.

Reflecting on this pivotal moment, Gene Frey, Founder and Board Chair of the Frey Foundation of Minnesota, shared:

“It is humbling to look back at the incredible organizations and causes the Frey Foundation has supported over the past 27 years. This transition represents an exciting opportunity to hand the baton to the next generation, continuing our family’s commitment to service and impact. The Frey Foundation was built to provide enduring community support—not just for one lifetime, but for many. The steps we are taking today will strengthen our ability to be a responsive, innovative partner for years to come.”

In the years ahead, three new family foundations will take shape. While these foundations are still in the early stages of development, they will build on the Frey family’s legacy of philanthropy with a focus on deeper engagement, broader impact, and renewed purpose. Updates on this transition and the emerging foundations will be shared on our website: www.freyfoundationmn.org.

Flor Treviño Frey, President of the Frey Foundation of Minnesota, expressed appreciation for the partnerships that have been central to the foundation’s mission:

“This moment marks both an ending and a beginning. While we reflect on the conclusion of the Frey Foundation’s work, we also embrace a new era of giving, grounded in the same values that have guided us for more than two decades,” said Frey. “As the Frey Foundation enters its final year, we are filled with immense gratitude for the trust and collaboration of our partners and colleagues, for the opportunity to serve, and for the enduring connections that will continue to inspire us in this next chapter.”
