FAQs

Foundation and General Funding

  • Yes. We believe an organization should have the flexibility to deploy funds where they are needed, when they are needed.

  • Not at this time. The Foundation only supports recognized 501(c)3 nonprofit organizations by the IRS.

  • There are many factors that influence the Foundation’s decision on grant size. An organization should request an amount that is appropriate for their project or goals/objectives. Please note Frey Foundation rarely supports 100 percent of a project budget.

  • A large number of worthwhile organizations approach the Foundation for support. The LOI process is highly competitive so even if a request fits within the guidelines an organization may not be invited to apply for a grant.

  • The Frey Foundation Board meets three times per year, in March, June, and October.

Letters of Inquiry

  • In an effort to be responsive to community needs, the Frey Foundation accepts and reviews letters on inquiry on an ongoing, rolling basis throughout the year, with no deadlines related to internal grant cycles.

  • Please take the time to provide comprehensive answers and present an accurate representation of your organization. Character limits are provided to guide response length.

  • Incomplete submissions are automatically declined and will not be reviewed. If you have questions about any of the requested information, please contact the Foundation (email@FreyFoundationMN.org).

  • Within the online portal, letters of inquiry can be saved in draft. Once started, LOIs must be completed and submitted within 90 days.

  • The LOI is the first step in the funding process and is intended to be an introduction to your organization. It is not an application for funding. Selected organizations will be invited to continue a conversation with Foundation staff, which may result in being invited to apply for a grant.

  • Foundation staff will notify organizations within 60 days; status can be checked at any time within the grant portal.

  • After reviewing your submission, if the request is declined, Foundation staff will inform you of such. This is not a reflection on the value of your organization, nor does it mean that the request was not a fit within the impact areas; it simply isn’t possible to fund every deserving proposal.

  • Unfortunately, Foundation staff are unable to provide direct feedback on individual LOIs.

  • You are welcome to submit another LOI after 24 months, if the organization continues to meet the funding guidelines.

  • Foundation staff will communicate next steps towards submitting a grant application.

Grant Procedures

  • Grant applications are open by invitation only. If invited to apply, the application is submitted via the same online portal as the letter of inquiry. A site visit with Foundation staff is also required.

  • If you are invited to apply for a grant, the process and deadlines will be clearly explained at that point. The Foundation has three grant cycles per year, which begin in January, April, and August.

  • From the application deadline to the Board meeting is approximately two months.

  • All funding decisions are made by the Frey Foundation Trustees at board meetings in March, June, and October.

  • Yes. Currently funded organizations will be invited to apply for renewed funding prior to the end of their grant term.
